Over the course of the weekend, Washington Redskins receiver Cody Latimer was arrested in Colorado. He was charged with second-degree assault, menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, prohibited use of a weapon, and reckless endangerment.
And now, details of the arrest have been made public.

"According to English, Latimer was agitated, angry and blamed English for his confrontation with the other person. English said Latimer then pulled out a black handgun from the pocket of his hoodie and said he saved two bullets for English and his girlfriend Shal, according to the police report.Latimer waved the gun around, although he didn’t point it directly at English or Shal, the police report says. According to English’s testimony and the police report, English and Shal were scared as Latimer said he was going to “kill everybody.”Latimer then said he would never hurt English or Shal, according to the report, and emptied the magazine and cleared the chamber of his gun. However, Latimer later became angry again and at one point fired two shots in close proximity to English, the police report says.English then pinned Latimer against the wall, and Latimer struck English on top of head with the gun, the police report says, and English fell, maintaining hold of Latimer. Again, English pushed Latimer against wall, and when Latimer told English to calm down, the altercation broke up, according to the police report."
So, yeah. That definitely doesn’t sound good for Latimer. Again, we’ll see if his side of the story differs from this account, but this certainly seems like a big issue that the Redskins will have to deal with in the coming days.
Latimer, a six-year NFL veteran and former second-round pick by the Denver Broncos back in 2014, was signed by the Redskins during the 2020 offseason. The 27-year-old was supposed to add depth and experience to a young receiver room and compete for a job as a top backup and special teamer. But now, that will all come into question.
Latimer was never considered a roster lock and Ron Rivera could make an example of him by cutting him (pending Latimer’s side of the story, of course). But after reading the police report, the team’s brain trust must have some reservations about keeping Latimer around.
We’ll keep an eye on Latimer in the coming week or so to see what the team does with him. If they do move on from him, it will be interesting to see if they decide to roll with the young talent they already have on the roster or if they target a veteran to take Latimer’s place as an experienced option on the depth chart.
Only time will tell what they decide to do.
