Four underrated free agents still remaining Redskins could target
QB Brett Hundley
The Redskins don’t currently have a backup quarterback. Yes, Alex Smith is on the roster, but the likelihood of him playing in 2020 is low. As a result, the team needs to replace Case Keenum on the bench and find a veteran who can play second-fiddle to Dwayne Haskins.
Brett Hundley could fit the bill. The 26-year-old spent last season as Kyler Murray‘s backup with the Arizona Cardinals. He played sparingly, but flashed nice mobility in limited action and was fairly accurate. He doesn’t have the best deep ball, but his short to intermediate game appears to be making strides.
If the Redskins are looking for a younger backup with upside, Hundley could be a sensible option. He was raw coming out of college but has learned from the likes of Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson as an understudy during his career. Perhaps he will still have a shot to grow and at the very least, his mobility makes him an intriguing target.
Hundley could fight for a backup spot in the preseason. The Redskins could try to bring in multiple veterans and at the very least, Hundley could join the ‘Skins on the cheap and fight for a role. Even if it doesn’t work out, Hundley isn’t going to sign a massive contract. So, if Washington signed him and a guy like PJ Walker from the XFL to compete for a backup job behind Haskins, that could work out just fine.
The Redskins could target a more established backup. If Jameis Winston‘s market dries up, perhaps the team could consider him. Or Cam Newton if he’s released. But a guy like Hundley makes more sense at this point in time given his price point for a team that is already spending heavily at quarterback thanks to the Smith deal.
