Earnest Byner is best known for “The Fumble”; the infamous strip that robbed him and the Cleveland Browns of a Super Bowl appearance two years before he would be traded to the Redskins. Sometimes, singular plays can become immortalized and suffocate a player’s legacy.

Luckily, Byner rebounded. While “The Fumble” is still emboldened in the history books, Byner has a ring to wave it away.

With the Redskins, Byner had his best years, earning his only two Pro Bowl berths. He broke 1,000 yards twice, in spite of the team’s pass-oriented attack led by Mark Rypien and “The Posse’. His consistency and durability helped the team take total control on offense.

Byner would be a part of the Redskins’ 1991 Super Bowl team, a team widely recognized as one of the best to ever grace the game. He deserves recognition for the part he played, for without him, the Redskins offense would have lacked a crucial dimension in that era and they may have been bested on the biggest stage.
