Washington Redskins punter Tress Way was named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 13.

For the better part of the last two years, Tress Way has been the NFL’s best punter. And he has finally gotten some recognition for it.

Way was named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Week 13 against the Carolina Panthers. During that contest, Way averaged 58 yards per punt, twice pinned the Panthers inside the 20, and had only one touchback.

That said, the touchback was the result of a ridiculous 79-yard punt. So, safe to say that the ‘Skins were happy with it as it flipped field position in the game and greatly benefitted the team.

Way has long been a strong punter, but this year, he has been the league’s best. He is leading the league in both average yards per punt (49.9) and net yardage (44.4) among qualified candidates. His strong performance is one of the reasons that he should make the Pro Bowl this year. And in all honesty, he should have made it last year as well.

There’s no doubt that Way deserves this award. He has arguably been Washington’s best player this season and he absolutely is one of the league’s best punters. His leg was a big weapon for the team against the Panthers and he played a massive role in the team’s ability to win the position battle and slow down the Panthers offense after their quick start.

This accolade means a lot for Way, but it is also a notable one for the Redskins. Why? They also had a player win the special teams player of the week award in Week 12 when Steven Sims took home the award largely thanks to a 91-yard kickoff return touchdown.

Next. Why the 'Skins should consider Ron Rivera as head coach. dark

We’ll see if the Redskins can make it three straight weeks with a player earning this award. Perhaps Dustin Hopkins will hit a number of field goals against the Green Bay Packers to make it a nice trifecta for the team.
