3. Steven Sims Jr. needs to handle all returns

The Redskins weren’t able to mount an offensive scoring drive during the game. But they were able to score on a kick return. And that was thanks to Steven Sims Jr.

After muffing a short kickoff, Sims picked up the ball and was able to break a tackle before weaving his way through the Detroit kickoff coverage team. He used his speed to outrun the final line of defense and was able to get into the end zone.

Sims’ dynamic playmaking ability is matched by nobody on the Redskins roster. He has elite speed and just knows how to work in space. The team is seemingly making an effort to get him some touches or gadget plays on offense, but they should extend his reach further.

Trey Quinn hasn’t done much as a punt returner, averaging 6.1 yards per return on punts. That’s not bad, but it ranks 35th out of 69 among players who have returned a punt this season. So, he could be improved upon.

Sims might be the exact right fit at that spot. It’s a way to get him on the field more and to use his speed more as well. We’ll see if the Redskins make the switch after his kick return touchdown, but it should definitely be something that they consider doing.
