2. QB Dwayne Haskins

Sticking with the theme of first-round picks contributing, Dwayne Haskins was a standout against the Bills. He didn’t exactly do anything dynamic, but he was as steady as ever. And that was a big deal for the Redskins.

After his first two outings of the season, people weren’t expecting much from Haskins. The first-round pick had struggled with turnovers and didn’t really do much as a passer in mop-up duty. Haskins had only attempted 22 passes, so it was far too early to make any judgment on him. But prepping for a game against a good Bills defense, expectations were pretty low for him.

And it’s safe to say that Haskins exceeded them.

During the game, Haskins completed 15-of-22 passes for 144 yards through the air and 14 rushing yards. He didn’t have any touchdowns but avoided turning the ball over.

It wasn’t anything flashy, but it was enough to keep the Redskins competitive with the Bills. And the team never really had a moment on offense where they crushed themselves with a crucial error.

Haskins still has some room for improvement. He did hold onto the ball a little bit too long in the contest and suffered four sacks as a result. And Haskins could stand to take some more chances downfield to manufacture more offense. That said, he is a rookie, and growing pains are part of the equation. Largely avoiding mistakes in his first start was a good beginning for him and it should be enough to keep him in the lineup as the starter.

We’ll soon see what happens with Haskins, but this game was certainly a step in the right direction. If he can continue to grow from game to game as he did in the preseason, he could really improve down the stretch of the season and become a silver lining for this lost season.
