3. EDGE Montez Sweat

One of the biggest bright spots from a solid defensive effort for the Redskins was the performance of first-round pick Montez Sweat. The edge rusher generated solid pressure for most of the afternoon and appears to be emerging as he gets more repetitions at the NFL level.

Sweat’s length and athletic ability were on display early and often against the Bills. He got in the way of Josh Allen on a number of occasions and was part of the reason that Allen wasn’t able to do much on the ground.

Sweat did a good job helping to contain Allen on the read option and stayed at home to avoid allowing massive plays to the quarterback. Sure, the running backs were able to break some runs during this game, but Sweat was still good in run support and helped limit Frank Gore at various times. Devin Singletary was harder to contain, but Sweat helped to occupy blockers and allow his teammates to make plays.

As a pass rusher, Sweat’s development continued as well, and he picked up a nice sack against the Bills. He used his length and speed off the edge to make plays and disrupt the game from that standpoint. And notching a sack against a mobile quarterback is certainly a good thing.

In short, Sweat showed off some of his better traits in this game. And now just past the halfway point of his rookie season, it appears that Sweat is starting to get more comfortable. After the bye week, it will be interesting to see what he can do. But Sweat certainly seems to be trending in the right direction after this performance.
