Redskins: Studs and duds from the team’s Week 6 win over Dolphins
Dud: Late-game effort and energy
The Redskins should have closed this game out long before they did. In fact, they never really did close this game out. The Dolphins had a chance to win with a two-point conversion, but they didn’t get it done.
In the fourth quarter, the Redskins had a 17-3 lead. They won the game 17-16. They seemingly lacked energy throughout the final period of the game. They couldn’t do much on offense. Meanwhile, the Dolphins were afforded the opportunity to march down the field a couple of times and get back into the game.
On Ryan Fitzpatrick’s potential game-tying drive, it seemed like the Redskins weren’t very engaged in the game. They were not covering well and Josh Norman allowed a fairly easy touchdown pass to bring the Dolphins within one. It just wasn’t a good look and really was reminiscent of one of the team’s most disappointing losses in recent memory.
That loss I’m talking about came against the New Orleans Saints in 2017. They were leading by 15 points on the road in the fourth quarter, but they allowed the Saints to drive down the field twice late to tie things up before losing in overtime. This game against the Dolphins could’ve ended similarly had the ‘Phins not elected to go for the win at the end of regulation.
If the Redskins want to create winning habits, they’re going to have to play with better energy down the stretch and play more disciplined. Even if this is a lost season, they can at least look to establish themselves as a team that plays hard. If they can’t do that, the rest of this season may be tough to watch.
