Dud: The second-quarter secondary

The Redskins secondary was horrific in the second quarter. There’s no two ways about it. They couldn’t cover anyone and made Trubisky look like one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

In that quarter, Taylor Gabriel scored three touchdowns. For some context, Gabriel, a 5-foot-8 speed-based gadget player, had three touchdowns over the course of his previous two seasons combined.

Safe to say, it’s not good to allow that type of production. And the ease at which he attained it was alarming as well.

More from Riggo's Rag

On one play, Gabriel was wide open as the entire defense lost him near the goal-line. He came across the formation and nobody recognized he was open until it was too late. After that, he was once again able to find a pocket of space in the endzone with nobody near him for an easy score.

Perhaps the most disappointing one of all came on a deep-ball when he torched Josh Norman and had him by almost two steps. Gabriel beat Norman right away and Norman never stood a chance to make the play. Had Trubisky not underthrown the ball, the play would’ve looked much worse than it ended up looking for the ‘Skins.

It’s clear that Washington needs to upgrade their secondary moving forward. They have some potential-packed young corners, but they need a true No. 1 option and possibly a No. 2 corner as well. Norman clearly isn’t the answer at this point in his career, and he will almost certainly be cut after the season.
