Stock Down – Redskins TE Matt Flanagan

In preseason, opportunities are sometimes hard to come by for fringe players at non-premier positions. Thus, it’s important that these players make the most of the chances they get, and not leave reason to doubt.

With Jordan Reed out for an unknown period of time at tight end, there might be a new opening behind Vernon Davis and Jeremy Sprinkle. Matt Flanagan will be fighting for it, along with J.P. Holtz and Donald Parham, and on Thursday, he didn’t use his opportunities as well as he could have.

There was one play that stood out for Flanagan; a third and four in the second half, on which Dwayne Haskins sensed pressure and got the ball out quickly. He delivered an accurate pass, past the first-down marker, but it was dropped by Flanagan, effectively ending the drive.

In those clutch moments, the spotlight is magnified on a player, and Flanagan made himself appear unreliable in that moment. He still has one more week to bounce back, and while he isn’t as tall as Parham, he has great size in his own right. But time is fleeting, and the next time Flanagan has the opportunity to keep a drive alive, he has to capitalize. Otherwise, his chance with the Redskins might go with it.
