Redskins: Riggo’s Rag Podcast – Building an NFC East supterteam
By Ian Cummings
The NFC East is a wild card division every year. The Redskins know this better than anybody.
Just four seasons ago, Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins took advantage of weak divisional competition to earn an automatic playoff bid with a record of 9-7. Last year, the NFC East looked nothing like its shell of a self in 2015; two teams made the playoffs, and each team won a playoff game.
Almost every season, the pecking order changes in the NFC East. There hasn’t been a repeat winner of the division since the early 2000s, when the Eagles took home the crown two years in a row. With the Eagles winning in 2017, and the Cowboys in 2018, one would think the Redskins have a chance. But to carry forth the trend, and to capitalize on chaos, they’ll need to match up with the immense amount of talent inside the division.
The NFC East truthfully might be the most talented division in the NFL, and if it isn’t, it’s up near the top in the rankings. The Cowboys and Eagles are both laden with stars, the Redskins feature an ascending roster with a heavy saturation of young talent, and even the Giants, for all their inconsistencies, have a player(s?) that demands respect out of sheer greatness.
To visualize the talent level of the NFC East, heading into the 2019 season, Jacob Camenker and I sat down, and put together our own NFC East super teams, going from position to position (Shoutout to Matt Hines for giving us the idea). There were long spells of agreement, but also curious points of contention. To listen in, click the play button below!
Depending on how their young players progress over the course of the 2019 offseason, the Redskins could match up well against the rest of the NFC East, in terms of talent. There’s a lot of potential with this squad, but also a lot of uncertainty, and sometimes, the only way to get an accurate representation of the value present, is to cross-reference with some of the game’s best.
