The Redskins draft performance demands attention, but so too does the performance of the other teams in the NFC East.

Three teams, the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants, comprise 37.5 percent of the Washington Redskins regular season schedule every year. These are the teams Washington is always most familiar with, and these are the teams that have two opportunities to ruin Washington’s year.

It goes without saying that the Redskins need to handle business within their division each year, and in years past, they haven’t done enough in that department. Last season, they started out 2-0 against division opponents, earning victories against the Cowboys and Giants with Alex Smith, before a late-season skid featured four division losses, each with increasing levels of embarrassment.

The year before, in another 7-9 campaign, the Redskins went 1-5 against divisional opponents, earning their only win in a low-scoring affair against an underwhelming Giants team. In 2016, they went 3-3, but that was a hair too little, for the team to mount a playoff bid.

The Redskins need to show up against those opponents, and to do that, they need to know exactly what they’re dealing with. The landscape of the NFC East was altered with the coming and going of the 2019 NFL Draft, and there’s a lot to takeaway from what teams did, and what they didn’t do.

Earlier in the month, I gave you an in-text review of the NFC East’s performance in the 2019 NFL Draft. Now, we hit the airwaves to discuss. I was joined by Riggo’s Rag contributor Nathan Britton to talk over the draft hauls of the Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants, in that order. For now, the Redskins can’t worry about the NFC East, however. Right now, they need to acclimate their incoming rookies at rookie minicamp, and they need to set the foundation for the 2019 season. The foundation set, as it so happens, will go a long way toward deciding the outcome.
