Redskins announce official jersey numbers for incoming 2019 rookies
By Ian Cummings
It’s the part of the Redskins offseason you either care about too much, or don’t care about at all: Jersey numbers.
On the surface, the new jersey numbers of the Washington Redskins rookies don’t seem to be important. But throughout NFL history, numbers have been the modules through which exceptional players are remembered. Were the 2019 NFL Draft to yield any such exceptional players to Washington, their jersey number would be synonymous with their legacy.
Thus, it might be of some importance to you to hear that the Redskins gave their draft picks new numbers today. Some numbers are repeats of numbers already taken on the roster, so they’ll serve as placeholders until the final 53-man roster has been formed, so that those with repeat numbers can then choose a new one. The Redskins first revealed the number choices on their official Twitter account. You can view the numbers and their corresponding players below:
Redskins Rookie Numbers
QB Dwayne Haskins – 7
WR Kelvin Harmon – 13
WR Terry McLaurin – 17
RB Bryce Love – 23 *
CB Jimmy Moreland – 25 *
LB Cole Holcomb – 57 *
OL Ross Pierschbacher – 72
OL Wes Martin – 78
OLB Montez Sweat – 90
OLB Jordan Brailford – 95
Bryce Love, Jimmy Moreland, and Cole Holcomb all received numbers worn by veterans on opposite sides of the ball, so when the opportunity arises later in the offseason to have a wider range of numbers to choose from, they will likely switch, and relinquish their current numbers back to their original owners.
The most notable number assignment of the bunch is Dwayne Haskins, who was awarded No. 7, a number that was last worn by Redskins Super Bowl winning quarterback, and one-time MVP, Joe Theismann. Theismann spoke in support of Haskins receiving the number recently, so it’s no surprise that the Ohio State product is donning the lucky number at Redskins rookie minicamp. Time will tell if he can make it his own.
The Redskins rookies will wear their new numbers proudly today at minicamp, but they won’t be the only ones there. There will also be 44 tryout players, seeking to earn spots on a growing roster. For information on some of the most compelling tryout players, be sure to click the link above.
