Rookie minicamp starts tomorrow, so naturally, the Redskins are placing their 2019 rookies under contract.

The Washington Redskins left the 2019 NFL Draft with nine new players, on paper. But in actuality, there was no contractual possession of said players until earlier today.

Per ESPN’s John Keim, the Redskins signed the following players to rookie deals: Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Stanford running back Bryce Love, Indiana offensive guard Wes Martin, Alabama offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher, North Carolina linebacker Cole Holcomb, North Carolina State wide receiver Kelvin Harmon, James Madison cornerback Jimmy Moreland, and Oklahoma State edge rusher Jordan Brailford.

To summarize, the Redskins signed eight of their ten 2019 draft picks, including first-round quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who figures to be a large part of the franchise moving forward. For four years, he’ll provide good value at the sport’s most important position, and in the latter years of his contract, the Redskins might be able to maximize his tenure with more cap space to utilize.

The only Redskins picks left unsigned ahead of rookie minicamp were first-round edge rusher Montez Sweat, from Mississippi State, and Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who was acquired in Round 3. It’s customary for third-round picks to take longer to lock down their contracts, but Sweat’s lack of a contract is notable. Per D.C. beat reporter J.P. Finlay, there’s no reason to be alarmed by Sweat’s situation, but it is at least peculiar to see him without a deal in place. Sweat’s situation is worth monitoring, especially if he doesn’t arrive at minicamp right away. Sweat’s heart condition could factor into stalled negotiations.

For now, however, the Redskins can feel good about having seven of their nine 2019 draft picks under contract, with the most important piece locked in for four years. Now, the attention turns from the files to the field, where the rookies will put on their pads for minicamp, starting tomorrow.
