Out of the gate, JoJo McIntosh has gotten more love than most of the free agents that Washington signed, and it’s easy to see why. The Redskins didn’t address the safety position this offseason, so there could be a path for a young free agent to sneak onto the roster.

That said, McIntosh was merely a fine player at Washington. He was a good hitter, but he never really emerged as a ballhawk, which is something that the Redskins should be looking for at the safety position. So, the question will be about whether or not he fits with the team or if the other young safeties already on the roster possess more upside than him.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein listed McIntosh as a probable priority free agent, which is exactly what he ended up being. Zierlein didn’t express a lot of confidence in McIntosh’s skill set, but he did show some confidence in the intangibles he brought to the table in his analysis.

More from Riggo's Rag

"The size, toughness and urgency all work in his favor, but he lacks a definable play trait that he can hang his hat on. McIntosh is an aggressive hitter who will rush downhill to the football and play with good urgency, but his lack of agility in the open field could create issues against NFL ball-carriers. A lack of instincts and balls skills show up in his poor ball production and create a ceiling of functional effectiveness as a pro."

Having a low ceiling isn’t usually a good thing for an undrafted free agent unless they are already good enough to serve as a solid backup. McIntosh isn’t quite there yet, but perhaps if he shows improved ball skills in camp, he will move up the depth chart.

Because the ‘Skins are thin at safety, McIntosh has an easier path to the roster than some of the other undrafted guys. It’s also a weaker-than-normal class of undrafted free agents, so McIntosh is still one of the better players that the team was able to bring in.
