B.J. Blunt was a player who did well during the East-West Shrine Game. He showed great instincts, which is expected of a former safety playing the linebacker position.

Blunt fell off the radar a bit during the draft because he’s a bit undersized for a linebacker at the next level. He’s only 6-1 and 220 pounds, but he could bulk up a bit more to be a rotational player as a 3-4 edge rusher. That’s probably his best fit at the next level.

The Redskins actually happen to need depth at the rush linebacker position. Montez Sweat was added to play along with Ryan Anderson, but the team’s depth beyond that was shaky. Now, Blunt will have a chance to compete with fellow rookie, Jordan Brailford, and Cassanova McKinzy at the position. If Blunt can bulk up a bit and show some of his all-around ability, he should have a chance to make the roster.

More from Commanders News

At McNeese State, Blunt was a really solid linebacker who played in the middle and functioned as a pass rusher. He had 102 tackles and 11 sacks during his final year at McNeese State, and considering that he just recently moved to linebacker, he should get better. The jump in competition from McNeese State to the NFL will have an impact on him, but he still should have a chance to make the roster.

Blunt has upside and will likely play one of the weaker positions on the Redskins roster. For that reason, he has as good a chance of making the Washington roster as any other undrafted free agent.
