The draft is over and now the real work begins for teams throughout the league, including the Redskins.

All the mocks are entertainment, all picks are preference; the key is the work players put into their craft. That’s the difference between being successful and not, in life, and in the NFL. The work.
Now that all the talking heads have exhausted the talking points on all the players and teams, how did the Washington Redskins fare?

For starters, the Redskins received high marks from many fans and draft analysts alike. It may seem counterintuitive, but since 2015, the Redskins have drafted as well as or better than most teams, and in an initial glance, this year continues that very encouraging trend.

The Redskins 2019 NFL Draft strategy seemed strong. They were patient. They moved up and down with purpose, addressing many needs. After this wild weekend in Nashville, the Redskins have a true option at franchise quarterback, if Dwayne Haskins can refine a few mechanics. Montez Sweat should be a holy terror at edge opposite Ryan Kerrigan, if his medical issues were indeed exaggerated.

If adding Terry McLaurin helps facilitate a level of comfort for Haskins and he contributes on special teams, this pick is a total win. In the middle rounds, Washington strengthened the depth of their offensive line by drafting two guards. Wide receiver Kelvin Harmon was still on the board late; he’s not a fast receiver, but he is consistent, strong, and precise, and he could develop into the chain mover the team has lacked in recent years.

Overall, I’d describe the Redskins weekend as productive, drafting for upside and need. If many of the picks hit, you might go as far as to say that Bruce Allen, Doug Williams, Dan Snyder and the boys did a fabulous job with their selections, minus the whole running back pick. Wouldn’t a safety had made more sense? Tight end? Another wide out? Just saying. Still, a very good haul by all estimates. Heck, even the leaders of the fanboards have been pacified for the moment. Certainly a small victory for this much-maligned front office.
