The Washington Redskins have added a second member to their squad from the Alliance of American Football. That’s former Utah product and Salt Lake Stallion, Salesi Uhatafe.

The AAF ceased operations just about a week ago, and since that time, a handful of their former players have found work for other NFL teams. The Redskins signed one, defensive end Andrew Ankrah, last week, and now they are adding another.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Redskins have agreed to terms with offensive lineman Salesi Uhatafe. The former Salt Lake Stallion played his college football at Utah and had previously spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Adding Uhatafe is a fine upside move for the ‘Skins, especially considering the awful issues they had at the guard position last year.

More from Riggo's Rag

Uhatafe played guard during his college career and was considered a potential late-round prospect in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, he didn’t get drafted and didn’t last long in the NFL. He went to the AAF to attempt to resurrect his career. And evidently, he did just that.

Uhatafe stands at 6-5, 315 pounds, so he has the requisite size that teams look for in their guards. He has solid strength, but he isn’t much of an athlete. He will also need to learn better technique if he wants a chance to last in the NFL.

For the Redskins, taking a chance on Uhatafe is a good move. They had a lot of issues at guard last season, and they frankly need all the depth they can get on their 90-man roster. Uhatafe may end up being only a camp body, but if he impressed enough during his time in the Alliance, he’s worth a flier. After all, it’s not like he’s a costly addition. The team is just using a roster space on him, and they definitely have some of those available.

Uhatafe may not make much of an impact, but it’s notable that the ‘Skins are taking a chance on a second player from the developmental league. Perhaps if Uhatafe has improved his technique, he could be a backup or practice squad player.
