. Cornerback. Washington. Byron Murphy. 17. player. 31

Ian: No one talks about it, but the New York Giants are so thin at cornerback, it’s honestly scary. Behind starter Janoris Jenkins, who’s getting dangerously old for a cornerback, there’s only Tony Lippett, Sam Beal, Antonio Hamilton, Michael Hunter, Ronald Zamort, and Grant Haley.

Recognize any of those names? I’m impressed if you do.

In fairness, Lippett has some experience as a starter, and if he can stay healthy, he could be a good ball-hawking defensive back for the Giants. And Sam Beal, who was selected by the Giants in the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft, has the upside to start as well. But there’s simply too much uncertainty for the Giants, at one of the most important defensive positions.

Thus, picking Washington cornerback Byron Murphy with the No. 17 pick is an easy decision to make.

The Giants have many options in Round 1, but if Murphy drops to them at No. 17, he makes a compelling argument on tape to be the pick. He has the best pure agility and movement ability of all the cornerbacks in the 2019 NFL Draft, and with his closing speed and matching ability, he can be a legitimate lockdown corner. Some would say he’s a bit undersized, but it never impacts him on tape. He’s a physical tackler, and a fearless player, and whether on the outside or in the slot, he should be a quality starter for years to come.
