87. . Edge Rusher. Mississippi State. Montez Sweat. 16. player

Jacob: Ian mentioned in the previous slide that Brian Burns is his top choice for the Redskins pick. Montez Sweat would be mine. I love Sweat’s overall ability, athleticism, and body of work. At the NFL level, I think he’ll have a chance to be a consistent all-around player and a very good pass rusher.

In the past two seasons, Sweat has logged 22.5 sacks for Ole Miss. He has been consistent and on tape, he shows flashes of excellent ability at the line of scrimmage.

Sweat has a very good first step, but he also possesses the functional strength and length needed to win against opposing tackles using strength-based moves. He is a well-rounded pass rusher and his experience should afford him an opportunity to find success early.

The reason that I have Sweat over Burns is that I believe that Sweat is a better run defender, from the tape I’ve seen. This makes sense, given that Sweat is bigger and stronger than Burns, and I think that gives him a slight edge as a three-down player. Of course, Sweat does have less bend that Burns and isn’t quite as fluid, so each player has their merits.

The Panthers would be extremely happy to land a guy like Sweat at this point. They need some edge rush help and Sweat should be scheme versatile for them as they operate with more of a 3-4 scheme this year. No matter what happens, it seems likely that the Panthers are going to take the best pass rushing option on the board with this selection.
