Jacob: I’ve been mocking Drew Lock to the Broncos for most of the offseason. I still don’t see a reason to stop.

Yes, the Broncos offloaded Case Keenum and acquired Joe Flacco. However, Flacco is a 34-year-old and while he’s a former Super Bowl Champion, he has only been decent at best in recent years. Lamar Jackson replaced him as the starter last season, and there’s no guarantee he will be a long-term answer for the Broncos at quarterback.

Lock has some interesting tools for the next level. His skill set compares favorably to that of Jay Cutler. He has a very strong arm and should have a chance to make every throw at the NFL level. But unlike Cutler, Lock is viewed as a very good leader who will work hard to fix some of his issues at the next level. He could be a franchise quarterback, but he just has to work on a couple of things moving forward.

Notably, Lock’s accuracy hasn’t been great, and that is somewhat related to his mechanics. His footwork will need some work, as that appears to be the root of some of his inaccuracy. Also, Lock will need to figure out when to throw touch passes a bit better. He too often will try to throw a fastball because of his excellent arm. If he can learn that, his accuracy will be much better.

Lock would be a great candidate to sit for a season behind Flacco and continue to develop. He has a lot of experience from his run as the Missouri starter, and he saw significant playing time for four years. He could end up being a really solid starting quarterback and if John Elway believes in him, he will select him with this pick.
