The Washington Redskins have been doing their due diligence on rookie quarterbacks this year. Per ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, they could still be in on Josh Rosen.

It’s no secret that the Washington Redskins are trying to add youth to their quarterback room. The team acquired Case Keenum as a cheap starting option via trade to compete with Colt McCoy in the absence of Alex Smith. However, all passers on the team are over the age of 30, so the team is looking to add a quarterback of the future at some point.

So far this offseason, the Redskins have done a lot of work on the rookie quarterback class. Recently, they have met with Drew Lock and were tied to Dwayne Haskins. But for the past few months, seemingly every quarterback set to see his name called during the draft has been looked at by Washington.

A name that the team has also been tied to is Josh Rosen. While some have recently seemed to discount them in that race, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen pointed out that the team still may be in on Rosen if the Arizona Cardinals select Kyler Murray with the first pick in the draft.

This is an encouraging development. Rosen was a top-10 pick last year but struggled to get going in Arizona. Part of the problem was that he played with a dreadful offensive line and the coaching for the Cardinals wasn’t very good either.

More from Commanders Rumors

Rosen has the tools needed to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. He has arm talent and good accuracy. If he is surrounded by better protection, he will at least get a chance to develop. Sure, the Redskins lack talent at the receiver position right now, but their offensive line is worlds better than what the Cardinals trotted out in front of Rosen last year. If the Redskins traded for him and invested some mid-round draft capital in pass catchers, Rosen would at least stand a fighting chance as a starter.

The question about getting Rosen is, what would the cost of acquiring him be? He was a top-10 pick last year, but if everyone knows that the Cardinals are going to take Murray first overall, they will lack leverage in trade talks. The Redskins could get involved and may even consider offering the 15th pick for Rosen. Or, more likely, they could offer their second-round pick and another late-round selection. But, either way, it remains to be seen if they will win in a trade.

Rosen simply makes a lot of sense for the Redskins. They need a young quarterback and if they aren’t big on any of this year’s passers, Rosen could be a good get. Being in the discussion for Rosen is a good thing, and even if they don’t ultimately land him, being involved is still a positive development.
