Report: Redskins, Dolphins have spoken about QB Ryan Tannehill
Ryan Tannehill is widely rumored to be available this offseason. According to a report, the Redskins and the Dolphins have discussed the quarterback.
This offseason, the Washington Redskins are going to be connected to every available quarterback in the NFL. They are one of the only teams with a glaring hole at the position that may not realistically be able to land a quarterback in the first round. So, there will be plenty of discussion about them pursuing veteran options or targeting passers via trade.
One recent rumor has connected the Redskins to Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. After another subpar season, the Dolphins appear to be ready to move on from Tannehill, especially with Brian Flores being brought in as the team’s new head coach.
Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald is reporting that the Redskins and Dolphins have engaged in talks about Tannehill. This isn’t a surprise. The ‘Skins were probably just doing their due diligence on the matter. Still, it seems highly unlikely that the team will actually target any trade for Tannehill for a couple of reasons.

The first is that the Dolphins seem content to move on from Tannehill no matter what this offseason. They may simply cut him if no team steps up and provides them with a trade package for him. So, the Redskins might be better served to wait this one out and trying to sign Tannehill on a one-year deal if they view him as a solid bridge quarterback.
Another reason that a trade might not work for the Redskins is the sheer cost of Tannehill. Over each of the next two seasons, Tannehill has a cap hit of over $25 million. Considering that the team already has Alex Smith on the books at $20 million, it will be hard to justify committing that many resources to one position, even if it is the quarterback spot.
Though Washington and Miami may have been in contact about a potential trade, it may have just been the Redskins checking in on his value. They are just doing their due diligence and making sure they understand all the players in the quarterback market. Hopefully, they will be able to find some quality competition for Colt McCoy without completely breaking the bank to do so.
Tannehill just doesn’t seem like a realistic option for Washington unless he’s released. He’s not worth his huge cap hit, and the fact that he has struggled to stay healthy could cause any trade to backfire. Unless Tannehill becomes a free agent, don’t expect the ‘Skins to go after him.
