5. Jordan Reed sees 10-plus targets against Panthers

The Redskins didn’t get Reed the ball last game until midway through the third quarter. And that wasn’t just him not catching the ball. They literally didn’t target him until the second half when the game was already well out of hand. That’s unacceptable.

Given the state of the team’s receiving corps, Reed needs to be included more in the offense. He’s healthy — which is rare — and the team needs to take advantage of that while they can and turn him into the matchup nightmare he has been at rimes in the past.

I highlighted Reed as one of my players to watch in Week 6, specifically because the team really should be given a chance to produce. Here’s what I said about the team’s plans in that piece.

  • "After the dud in New Orleans, the Redskins offensive coaches should look to get the ball to Reed early and often. The “Feed Reed” strategy should be in full effect and rest assured they will target him at least a couple of times on the opening drive. That’s the way to get him involved and make him a matchup nightmare like he has been when healthy in the past. Reed has to be given a chance to produce. And if he isn’t this week, then the squad will definitely need to re-evaluate their plans for him. Alex Smith loves throwing to his tight ends, and this is the matchup to start to make that happen. If Reed’s usage continues to decline, that will be a bad sign for an offense that is lacking upper-level weaponry."

More than anything else, it’s time to just try and get Reed the ball. Even if the Panthers linebackers/safeties are able to limit him in terms of yardage, he needs to have a chance to produce. Expect the ‘Skins to try and get him 10-plus targets in this contest and really look to establish him as one of their top offensive weapons.
