Redskins WR Robert Davis feared to have suffered torn ACL
By Ian Cummings
The injury bug seems to have come back for more at Redskins Park. The latest victim is wide receiver Robert Davis.
The Washington Redskins were one of the most injured teams in the NFL last year, ending the season with 21 players on injured reserve and a treasure trove of midseason hires middling on the roster.
After getting through the brunt of the 2018 offseason relatively unscathed, it was believed that the Redskins could be spared in 2018. But over a span of three days, the injuries have roared back, and they have acted quickly. Second-round running back Derrius Guice was recently lost for the season with a torn ACL, along with reserve tight end Manasseh Garner. Now, it’s believed that backup receiver and 2017 sixth-round pick Robert Davis has suffered the same injury in training camp.
Davis was expected to make a push to join the Redskins in the regular season on the 53-man roster. Locked in the middle of a five-way battle for the Redskins’ depth receiver slots, Davis flashed in the team’s first preseason matchup. With a combination of 4.4 speed and a 6-foot-3 frame, he was a likely roster candidate, provided he had developed.
Now, it appears Davis may have to wait another year. There is yet to be confirmation, but Davis was taken off the practice field on a cart after coming down awkwardly from a catch, per J.P. Finlay of NBC Sports Mid-Atlantic. The injury looked bad from the start. It’s likely that test results won’t look any better.
With Davis presumably out of the picture at wide receiver, the Redskins’ battle now grows a bit thinner. Maurice Davis appears to be the front runner for the team’s No. 4 receiver spot, with Brian Quick, Trey Quinn, Cam Sims, and Simmie Cobbs trailing closely behind. Shay Fields and Darvin Kidsy also loom in the wings. In the coming weeks, the Redskins will look to settle things at the position. The injury to Davis helps with that, but at a great cost.
If any concrete updates arise in the situation of Robert Davis following his MRI later this evening, we will add it to the end of this post. As always, thanks for following along with us here at Riggo’s Rag. Injuries are a part of life in the NFL. Let’s hope that this recent swell is an anomaly, rather than the status quo.
