It took just one preseason run for the Redskins to fall in love with Derrius Guice. Unfortunately, that same run has ended his 2018 campaign.

If you were looking forward to seeing Derrius Guice play for the Washington Redskins in 2018, you’re not alone. But after today’s MRI results, it appears we’ll have to wait another twelve months to see Washington’s second-round pick in action. Per Ian Rapoport, Guice suffered a torn ACL in the Redskins’ preseason debut.

Guice was in line to be the Redskins next premier lead back in 2018. He was drafted in the second round at No. 59 overall, but many mock drafts had him going higher, and he was widely believed to be the second best running back in the class. A select few had him as the No. 1 prospect at his position.

Despite the positives in Guice’s game, he fell in the draft due to character concerns, which were later dismissed as baseless. Washington nabbed him in Round 2, and proceeded to observe his development through training camp.

Guice quickly became a fan favorite with his contagious positivity, and on the field, he appeared to have the makings of a star. Fueled by his draft-day slight, Guice was set to enter 2018 with a lot to prove. Now he’ll have to spend that time waiting. Not dissimilar to Dalvin Cook, Guice’s rookie season will be forgone.

With Guice gone, the Redskins will likely rely on Robert Kelley or Samaje Perine as their lead back, with Chris Thompson and a choice of Byron Marshall or Kapri Bibbs manning the wings. The Redskins’ running back room has considerable depth; the Guice injury will not be insurmountable. But for the team, it’s devastating to see such an exciting talent lost so quickly. And for Guice himself, this lost opportunity will not be redeemed for another year.

Washington’s running game has limped along for years, and with the arrival of Guice, there was hope that things would change. Now that hope is in jeopardy.
