Redskins: 5 running backs to consider after the Derrius Guice injury
The Washington Redskins should do their due diligence on running backs after Derrius Guice’s injury. Here are some options.
I’m going to put this bluntly. It’s not going to happen. After the season-ending ACL tear that Derrius Guice suffered in the first preseason game, there was a lot of panic from Redskins fans who were looking at the running back depth chart. Once considered to be a position of strength, without Guice, the depth chart suddenly looked barren, and many called on the team to add a replacement.
What seems to be lost in this moment is some clarity. The Redskins already have a good mix of rotational backs. Sure, running with a committee isn’t ideal, especially since Guice was expected to be a starter and a potential workhorse, but the fact is that injuries happen in the NFL. It was time for the next man up. And whether you believe that’s Rob Kelley or Samaje Perine (I happen to like the latter), they are going to be given a chance to prove themselves.
Beyond that, it’s not like there is an abundance of three-down starters at the running back position in the NFL. Not many teams have one potential three-down back, let alone two. The Redskins had Guice as that option and when he went down, they had to move onto the committee approach.
While I’m confident that they will stick with the depth they have, they still should do their due diligence and take a look at who is available on the open market. I’ll warn you before reading, this list goes from decent options to desperation fairly quickly, as there really aren’t any true workhorse backs available. Here’s a look at the best of the bunch that the Redskins could explore acquiring.
