It’s the most important position in football, and one of the most important in sports. It remains to be seen whether or not the Redskins upgraded there this offseason.

The Washington Redskins moved on from the Kirk Cousins conundrum about as well as they could, trading a third-round pick and stout slot cornerback Kendall Fuller for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith. The price was steep; letting go a talented, ascending defensive player is never easy. But it was a necessary price for a team that needed little more than a quarterback to compete again in 2018.

Now, the Redskins have that quarterback, and they have him for four years. But what exactly does Alex Smith bring to the table? Ask two different people, and you’ll likely receive two different answers. The success Smith enjoyed last season had him in the MVP conversation for much of the year, but the body of work beforehand tells a very different tale: That of a reserved game manager, afflicted with complacency.

Under the right circumstances, a team can win with Smith. But what can Smith do for his team? And how far can he take them? Does he have the capability to elevate those around him?

The answer might surprise you. Last week, we brought in on-site contributor Ken Johannessen to talk about the Redskins roster. This week, we switched it up, inviting KC Kingdom writer Travis Steffen onto the set to give his first-hand insight on former Chiefs’ quarterback Alex Smith. You can listen here by clicking the play button below. You won’t want to miss this one.

The biggest knocks on Smith are his inconsistencies in the playoffs, his seemingly coddling supporting cast, and his perceived unwillingness to throw the ball deep. These are talking points that gain a lot of steam in certain communities, but based on Steffen’s comments, these knocks don’t hold a great deal of merit. There is a lot of reason to be excited.
