The Washington Redskins will open their training camp next month and the roster will begin to take shape.

Training camp is five weeks away and we won’t know who is on the Washington Redskins final 53-man roster until early September, but it is never too early to speculate about the final numbers. There could be surprising additions. There could be surprising cuts. Another free agent or two could be added to the roster. A trade could happen. In other words, the roster is far from being set in stone. Let’s see who might be there on opening day. Here’s a quick one-page prediction:

Quarterbacks: Alex Smith, Colt McCoy, Kevin Hogan

Running Backs: Derrius Guice, Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, Kapri Bibbs

Wide Receivers: Josh Doctson, Paul Richardson, Jamison Crowder, Brian Quick, Trey Quinn, Simmie Cobbs

Tight Ends: Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Jeremy Sprinkle

Offensive Tackles: Trent Williams, Morgan Moses, Ty Nsekhe, Geron Christian

Offensive Guards: Brandon Scherff, Shawn Lauvao, Tyler Catalina

Centers: Chase Roullier, Tony Bergstrom (C/G)

Defensive Linemen: Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, Stacy McGee, Matt Ioannidis, Tim Settle, Anthony Lanier, Ziggy Hood

Outside Linebackers: Ryan Kerrigan, Preston Smith, Pernell McPhee, Ryan Anderson

Inside Linebackers: Mason Foster, Zach Brown, Zach Vigil, Shaun Dion Hamilton, Josh Harvey-Clemons (Hybrid)

Cornerbacks: Josh Norman, Quinton Dunbar, Fabian Moreau, Orlando Scandrick, Greg Stroman

Strong Safeties: D.J. Swearinger, Deshazor Everett

Free Safeties: Montae Nicholson, Troy Apke

Special Teams: Tress Way, Dustin Hopkins, Nick Sundberg, Greg Stroman (Punt Returner)

Practice Squad: Kyle Kalis, Manasseh Garner, Quin Blanding, Casey Dunn, Robert Davis, Timon Parris, Josh Holsey, Ondre Pipkins, Keith Marshall, Fish Smithson

Injured Reserve: Arie Kouandjio

Shaun Dion Hamilton could be placed on injured reserve if he is not fully healed from injuries sustained last season at Alabama. Leaving Robert Kelley off the roster was a difficult choice, but Kapri Bibbs offers a better change of pace option. Brian Quick was beginning to prove himself late in the season and this gives him an edge over several borderline receivers for now. Tony Bergstrom is simply listed as an offensive lineman at the team website and he has taken some snaps at center this offseason. We have Bergstrom listed as the backup center and a backup guard.

The versatility of Josh Harvey-Clemons will afford him the opportunity to play inside linebacker and strike safety (the Su’a Cravens role). Greg Stroman may not make the final roster as a cornerback, but he could make the team as a punt returner/cornerback. Orlando Scandrick will likely take on the role that Will Blackmon assumed in recent seasons – a steady veteran presence with leadership skills.

It is difficult to predict who will be on the final 53-man roster for the Washington Redskins.  Injuries in training camp can dictate changes. A talented player or two being released by another team could happen. A younger player could supplant a veteran. A surprise trade can’t be ruled out.  For now, this is a best guess scenario. Training camp is five weeks away and the quest for coveted roster spots will begin in earnest.
