Some of the ratings for players and teams in Madden 19 were leaked on Monday. Here’s a look at how the Redskins are ranked.

Every year, a lot is made of the Madden ratings. Perhaps because there are always some mistakes or egregious errors, or perhaps because there isn’t much going on when the ratings are leaked. But nevertheless, the ratings have come out once again and as always, they are intriguing.

Regarding the Redskins, many fans are probably hoping that the squad would be considered highly among the teams across the league. After all, the Redskins had a solid offseason, adding talent to their defensive line, grabbing Alex Smith to serve as their quarterback, and drafting Derrius Guice to be the answer at running back. That should be enough to move them close to the top 10, right?

Well, not so fast. According to a tweet by the Sunday Night Football on NBC, the Redskins are a 79 overall and are tied for the No. 14 rank in the NFL. Here’s a look at the list that SNF tweeted.

Being ranked No. 14 overall isn’t a major surprise. The team probably fell into the proper range, though they could have been a top 12 team as well. The bigger surprise is the teams that are ranked ahead of them.

For starters, the Cowboys being rated an 81 is surprising. The team has a strong offensive line and running game, but their defense was merely decent at best last season. Additionally, Dak Prescott struggled when Ezekiel Elliott was out last year, and now he will have to find success without Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. That could be tough to do, so this is a bit rich for the Cowboys.

Other notables ahead of the Redskins are the Seahawks, Raiders, and the Chiefs. The Seahawks are a team that could badly regress if their defense can’t continue to play well, as their offensive line play is awful. The Raiders have added some recognizable names this offseason, but they also lost some guys like Michael Crabtree. The Raiders are improved, but if anything, they are equal to the Redskins.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs have a rookie quarterback with a solid supporting cast. They are a team that is probably more on par with the Redskins, though they could be placed properly if Patrick Mahomes really lives up to his billing.

Despite the lack of love on a team-wide scale, the Redskins saw nine players ranked an 80 or above. Per Madden-School, they are the following.

This is good to see for the Redskins, and all these ratings are well deserved. The most surprising of the bunch is probably Thompson being rated an 83, even coming off such a great season. But Madden tends to value pass catching backs highly, as they are versatile within the game. And in real life, that also applies to the “Chris-Army Knife.”

That said, there is one glaring omission from this list. Ryan Kerrigan. This is somewhat surprising, as Kerrigan was rated an 86 overall by the end of last season in Madden. So, perhaps he was excluded from this list by accident. Also, the piece on Madden-School cautions that this is from an “early build of Madden 19,” so perhaps they just don’t have Kerrigan’s rating calibrated properly yet.

Madden ratings don’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but the fact that the Redskins have nine players who are at least an 81 is an encouraging development. They seem to be building a roster that could contend for the postseason, and these numbers back up the assertion that the team should at least be better for the 2018 season.
