Redskins Halftime Takeaways: Defense leading team in first half
By Ian Cummings
It was a first half to forget for the Washington Redskins offense, who couldn’t get much going against a stifling Broncos defense.
With only one first down to boast in the first half, and with Kirk Cousins starting the game 1 for 8 for just six yards, the offense has a tough time getting anything done in the first half against Denver. The running game didn’t give him any help, and while the Redskins defense put up a respectable outing, much needs to improve if this team is to pull out a win.
It wasn’t exactly unexpected. The Broncos defense is one of the best in the league, and they have the personnel to overwhelm the Redskins’ undermanned offensive attack. But the Redskins scoring unit was able to do no such thing for quite some time. The defense got pressure, covered receivers like glue, and the running game was as bad as it’s ever been.
It’s hard to say how the Redskins can improve in the second half. The offense just doesn’t have it. Injuries have stripped the team to its core, and some of the holes that need filling can’t be plugged by mere coaching. They got the ball rolling later in the second quarter, but consistency eluded them throughout the affair.
The best way to adjust would be simply to keep the ball moving quickly and unpredictably. Jay Gruden needs to try a little more creativity and keep this defense on its toes. And even then, the gaps in talent might be too great to overcome. When a team is playing with its sixth and seventh string running backs, it’s hard to expect a competitive performance.

While it certainly hasn’t been the most inspiring start, the Redskins are still in contention for the win largely thanks to their strong defensive performance. With some improvement and a game plan adjustment in the second half, they can pull away from the Broncos, who are still handicapped by their offense.
