The Washington Redskins placed Trent Williams on the Injured Reserve. To replace him, they have signed Dare Ogunbowale from the practice squad.

The redskins are in a bit of a predicament at the running back position. Samaje Perine is dealing with a groin injury that may or may not keep him out of Sunday’s game. Additionally, LeShun Daniels, one of the team’s backups, broke his hand during practice this week and he is likely out for the rest of the season. Because of this, the Redskins had only one healthy running back on the roster in Kapri Bibbs. They had to make a move prior to the game, and they did just that on Friday.

To open a spot for another running back, the Redskins elected to place Trent Williams on Injured Reserve. It had been reported that Williams was unlikely to play for the last two games of the season due to a knee injury he has been dealing with all season. With surgery imminent, the Redskins decided to end Williams’ season which was a smart move.

To replace Williams on the roster and to add to the running back stable, the team elected to bring in Dare Ogunbowale from their practice squad. Ogunbowale had a solid career at Wisconsin, a school that has been notable for producing NFL caliber running backs.

In his final two seasons at Wisconsin, Ogunbowale saw 285 carries and managed 1,325 yards as part of the team’s running back rotation. In addition to his skills as a runner, he has been a solid receiver, as he caught 60 passes for 507 yards and he looked good coming out of the backfield. He could become a weapon at the NFL level, but he just didn’t project to be a three down back.

The Redskins will likely use Ogunbowale in a limited role if Perine is out on Sunday. Ogunbowale will spell Bibbs and could see some extra action in the passing game. Bibbs is also a solid pass catcher though, so Ogunbowale likely wouldn’t see a lot of snaps.

At the end of the day, giving another young player a chance is a solid move. Ogunbowale could turn into a decent change of pace back, and this will be a good chance for him to audition for multiple NFL teams in the final two weeks of the season.
