Kapri Bibbs was signed just a few days ago off of the Redskins’ practice squad. And in just his first game, he made a lasting impact, and he may have enticed the Redskins to see more.

The 2014 undrafted free agent only had two carries for 6 yards, but he made a considerable impact on the game, scoring the second quarter touchdown that would give the Redskins a two possession lead over the Cardinals. He made quick changes in direction, using the open space to his advantage, and with the help of a few solid blockers, he was able to find the end zone.

Kapri Bibbs had been out of the job for some time before the Redskins called and signed him to the practice squad. He was nearing the time territory where most NFL hopefuls lose their patience and hang up the cleats, and even after his tryout with Washington, he wasn’t immediately rewarded the job. But the Redskins eventually needed the help, and he signed. And yesterday, he was crucial in a confidence-building win against Arizona.

If Bibbs can build on his performance in Week 15, then there’s plenty of reason for excitement surrounding the former Colorado State running back. The Redskins have some tools at the position, but no one has managed to carve out a role as a reliable and consistent ground player. Chris Thompson is known as one of the best third down backs, but he doesn’t have the size to be leaned on as a workhorse.

On the flip side, Samaje Perine has shown promise, but he’s yet to prove himself as a complete back, too often being ‘just a guy’, much like Robert Kelley. He’s good at grinding forward for positive yardage, but he’s not particularly elusive, as opposed to Thompson, and after his quick burst to start the run, he flames out, only occasionally giving fans a reason to anoint him the savior at running back.

Bibbs, meanwhile, has the potential to be what Thompson and Perine can’t. He’s 5-foot-11, 203, possessing both adequate size and stellar speed, as was seen on Sunday. He can mend the gap between pass catcher and battering ram, and if the Redskins can find a running game in Bibbs, then that low-key practice squad signing will look smarter and smarter.
