The Washington Redskins added three players to the IR to continue their injury plagued season. Jordan Reed was one of them.

Over the course of the 2017 NFL season, the Washington Redskins have been extremely unlucky with injuries. Going into Week 15, the team had a whopping 15 players on Injured Reserve and that number jumped up to 18 on Tuesday afternoon. The team elected to place a trio of players on the IR and among them was Jordan Reed.

Per the team’s official Twitter, Reed, running back Byron Marshall, and reserve linebacker Chris Carter were put on the IR to end their seasons. All of these were smart moves and needed to happen. In particular, Reed’s season needed to end. Reed hadn’t practiced since suffering a hamstring injury midway through the season and he had missed the previous six games. The team is going to have to think long and hard about what to do with him moving forward. He will likely remain with the team, as no other team will want to take on his contract.

As for Marshall and Carter, both had suffered injuries in the team’s Week 14 loss. Marshall had pulled up lame due to a hamstring injury on a kickoff return. While he was initially considered day-to-day, the Redskins obviously didn’t think that he would be able to come back in the final three weeks. Now, his future with the team will be in question.

Meanwhile, Carter fractured his fibula in the fourth quarter on kick coverage. Thus, his addition to the IR is far from surprising. He was a good special teams player this year so perhaps the Redskins will consider keeping him in the future.

To replace the three departed players, the Redskins added a few guys to their roster. Notably, linebacker Pete Robertson, who saw action in a game this season, was added from the practice squad. The linebacker will likely take over for Carter on the special teams unit, though he will need to make sure that he avoids making mental mistakes on coverage like he did when he downed a ball and then proceeded to run into the end zone. That was clearly a rookie mistake and he will have three weeks to make his coaching staff forget about that.

The other two additions to the roster were linebacker Otha Peters and running back Kapri Bibbs. Peters will provide linebacker depth while Bibbs could end up seeing action as a reserve runner. In 2016, Bibbs was on the Denver Broncos and totaled 129 yards on 29 carries. He also had a couple of receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown, including a 69-yard touchdown. Bibbs has a lot of upside, so perhaps giving him some action as the primary backup to Samaje Perine could pay off.

To replace the players brought up from the practice squad, the Redskins signed linebacker Alex McCallister, running back Dare Ogunbowale, and safety Orion Stewart. All are merely depth signings who seem likely to remain on the practice squad. McCallister has the most upside as he was a seventh round draft pick by the Eagles in 2015.

Overall, these moves are just ones to patch up the roster late in the season. Perhaps the team will find a gem. If they do, it will most likely be Bibbs. But for now, this is just about getting healthy guys onto the active roster.
