This week, against the Seahawks, the Redskins’ offensive line won’t have it any easier than they did last week. It doesn’t help that yet another undeveloped backup will be thrust into the starting role.

The Redskins came into their game against the Cowboys already short four starting offensive linemen. This week, they’ve gained one, and possibly two with Brandon Scherff, back. But for two steps forward, they’ve also taken one step back. Shawn Lauvao will be out on Sunday. And in his place, the Redskins will be forced to start Arie Kouandjio at left guard.

Kouandjio, 25, was drafted by the Redskins in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Coming from the vaunted Alabama Crimson Tide football program, and looming over the competition at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds, Kouandjio was expected to progress nicely for the Redskins. However, that wasn’t the case. Two years into his tenure with the team, he was frequently seen as underwhelming and uninspiring, and after being outplayed by two undrafted free agents, he was subsequently cut at the end of preseason.

After being cut from the Redskins’ roster, Kouandjio was soon signed to the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. He remained there for over a month, until the Redskins called for his services once again. His familiarity with the team will, at the very least, give him a bit of a foundation to go off of. But Kouandjio making the start in Week 9 is concerning. While Lauvao wasn’t perfect, he provided a steady veteran presence, and he was the team’s best option at left guard. Kouandjio is a familiar face. But his presence on the starting lineup won’t make anyone rest easy.

This tidbit of good news, however, might have that affect. Brandon Scherff is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. He’s been limited in practice so far this week, but his progress is promising for the Redskins’ staff. After suffering an MCL sprain in the Redskins’ loss to the Eagles, Scherff sat out the game against the Cowboys. Scherff, being the team’s best interior blocker by far, and one of the best blockers in the league, was dearly missed. The void left by his absence was far too apparent. The team failed to gain any offensive momentum without him on the field. If Scherff can’t go on, Tyler Catalina will likely start in his place.

There’s no telling if Scherff will start or not on Sunday. On one hand, yes, the team would love to have him in the lineup. But if there’s a risk of aggravating his current injury even further, then the better option would be to take it slow with the All-Pro lineman. We’ll continue to provide any updates surrounding the Redskins’ offensive line situation. If Scherff starts, they’ll be in good hands. If he doesn’t, they’ll be in for a rough contest.
