4. New York Jets

One of the biggest surprises in the NFL this season has been the performance of the New York Jets. Many thought that they could go winless heading into the 2017 campaign. At the midway point of their season, they stand at 3-5, but they have played tough against high level competition. The team is definitely overachieving though, and they don’t have a long term answer at quarterback.

That’s not to take away from what Josh McCown has done this season. In his 15th season, McCown is having one of the best single seasons of his career. He has completed a career high 70 percent of his passes and has a TD-INT rate of 12-to-7 despite playing with a group of receivers who would be best suited as No. 2 guys at best.

Still, McCown is 38 and the Jets need to build for the future. He is not the long term answer at the position, and he’s a free agent at the end of the year. That may be enough for the team to look for a replacement, or try to re-sign McCown as a backup for the team.

Cousins could end up being the answer if signed. The Jets, armed with the second most cap space in the league for 2018 at $56 million, could throw a massive contract Cousins’ way in hopes that the gritty attitude of their current team could carry over. Under Cousins’ leadership, the team could have a chance to contend for a Wild Card spot, especially if they could continue to improve their team in the draft.

Should the Jets add Cousins, the team could look to improve their running back and receiver positions in order to give him more offensive weaponry. The could chase guys like Jarvis Landry and Sammy Watkins in free agency while trying to upgrade the running back position in the draft. Regardless, landing Cousins would immediately upgrade their team and give them a real chance to compete for the Wild Card in his first season in the Meadowlands.
