3. Denver Broncos

This is a team who is new to the list of potential suitors for Cousins. Before this season, it was expected that the team would continue to start Trevor Siemian while developing Paxton Lynch. That plan has not worked out well for the team thus far in 2017.

Siemian started the season red hot in his first two contests but has cooled considerably since that point. Right now, he looks like a backup at best as his accuracy just isn’t good enough to get the job done. Meanwhile, Lynch has missed the entire season to date working through a shoulder injury. The team actually re-signed Brock Osweiler to ensure that they had a quality backup, and that doesn’t bode well for Lynch’s future.

With that said, the team would definitely have interest if Cousins became available. They already have a very strong defense that is led by Von Miller and Aqib Talib. That said, in order to compete for another Super Bowl, they have to put up better production on offense. The only way that they can achieve that is by adding a quarterback.

Cousins could fit the type of passer that John Elway is looking for. He is a veteran player with good accuracy and he has proven to be a great quarterback when given solid weapons and protection. With Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders already in place as No. 1 and No. 2 options for the team, Cousins would have an upgraded receiving corps immediately after joining the team. Then, in the draft the team could focus on adding some extra protection and an upgrade at tight end and slot receiver.

The one catch with getting Cousins to the Broncos is that the team would have to open up some cap space to add him to the fold. Currently, the Broncos have $13 million cap room open for the 2018 season. That will not be enough to get Cousins. The team would have to jettison some talent to get that number between $25 million and $30 million. That would be no easy task, unless the team could offload sunk cost Menelik Watson and cut a replaceable guy like Domata Peko.

If the Broncos really want Cousins, they could open up space for him. It would be hard, but Elway has demonstrated a willingness to take risks in the past. For that reason, the Broncos come in at No. 3 on our list.
