The Redskins offensive line is in very tough shape on Sunday. It was confirmed that they will be without three starters, including Brandon Scherff.

On Saturday, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Redskins offensive line. They were dealing with numerous injuries, and nobody knew who would be able to suit up on Sunday afternoon. When the Redskins signed Orlando Franklin and Arie Kouandjio to the active roster, it appeared that they would be without a good chunk of their line. That has turned out to be true.

It started on Friday when Spencer Long was declared out with knee injuries. Chase Roullier is going to step into the starting role for the first time in his career, and that was thought to be a minor deal.

However, Trent Williams was declared out early Sunday morning. Williams, arguably the best left tackle in the league, is dealing with a knee injury that will likely require surgery in the near future. He had to rest his knee to avoid damaging it too much. But without the injured reserve tackle Ty Nsekhe, the team is going to have to start T.J. Clemmings at the position. Clemmings is still a raw player and he has not been very good in limited action for the team.

Just when it appeared things couldn’t get much worse, it was confirmed that Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff is also going to miss the contest. Scherff suffered an MCL sprain last week against the Eagles, and many were questioning whether or not he would be able to play. He will not be able to suit up, and that will put the Redskins in a tough situation.

With Clemmings and Roullier already occupying starting positions, the Redskins are going to be forced to use another backup. In all likelihood, undrafted rookie free agent Tyler Catalina will get the nod. Catalina made the team thanks to his positional versatility and somewhat strong play. He might be able to hold up, but he hasn’t played much so it will be hard to tell until he sees the field. Also, he is recovering from a concussion that kept him out last week, so he may not be at full strength for the game.

Making matters worse, the Redskins depth has been destroyed by the injuries. Their top backups will be a trio of players that they added to the roster this week. Orlando Franklin, formerly one of the league’s top guards, will provide interior depth and can play right tackle if needed. Arie Kouandjio can play guard, but he played poorly in limited action for the Redskins before being released prior to the season. Tony Bergstrom was signed to be a backup center, but he is another player who has been decent at best during his NFL career.

The Redskins are in a bind this week. They are missing four of their best six offensive linemen and they are playing a divisional rival who will want to crush Kirk Cousins. The team has to hope that they are able to keep the pocket somewhat clear and allow Cousins to make some plays in the passing game.
