With Josh Norman out for the next few weeks, Bashaud Breeland has an opportunity to reassert himself as a No. 1 cornerback.

After two solid seasons in 2014 and 2015, Bashaud Breeland struggled with consistency throughout his third season. However, through the first quarter of the Redskins season Breeland has regained his confidence; playing with a dog-like mentality. The same tenacity he displayed in his first two years in the NFL.

As the Redskins enter a crucial three-game stretch against the 49ers, Eagles, and Cowboys, they’ll need the best of Breeland. On Sunday he’ll likely shadow a familiar face in former teammate Pierre Garcon. The two have had their share of battles at practices in the past. But Sunday will be totally different. The matchup of Garcon versus Breeland should have a big impact on the game.

Fortunately for Breeland and the Redskins defense, Brian Hoyer is the starter at quarterback. In three of the five games the 49ers have played Hoyer has failed to throw a touchdown. He’s thrown four touchdowns compared to four interceptions, and is completing less than 59 percent of his passes. Hoyer’s favorite target is the aforementioned Garcon, the No. 1 option in the Niners passing offense. Through five games, Garcon has failed to reach the end zone, but has 28 catches to go along with 379 yards.

Following the 49ers game, Breeland will more than likely draw assignments against Alston Jeffery and Dez Bryant in two key divisional games for the Redskins. Carson Wentz and the Eagles have been exceptional in the passing game as Philadelphia ranks ninth in passing averaging 250.7 yards per game.

Dez Bryant will more than likely become more of a focal point on the Cowboys offense with running back Ezekiel Elliot likely suspended for six games. Breeland burst onto the NFL scene limiting Bryant in his rookie year on Monday Night Football and should be able to assume the responsibility of covering Bryant, should Norman miss that game.

The Norman injury will undoubtedly test Washington’s depth in the secondary. Third-year corner Quinton Dunbar will assume Breeland’s role while rookie Fabian Moreau might see playing time as well. Second-year man Kendall Fuller is better suited in the slot, but can also play outside. The Redskins are in a good spot to withstand Norman’s injury. The star cornerback was seen working out rehabbing at Redskins Park on Thursday, so there’s a chance he can return sooner than later.

Regardless, the Redskins need the absolute best of Breeland with Norman out. Breeland has the opportunity to sign a lucrative contract this off-season and with a strong showing over the next few weeks he’ll undoubtedly get it whether it’s from the Redskins or another team.
