Well, this is awkward.

A year ago today, Jay Gruden and Sean McVay were on the same team. Devoted to the same cause. Tasked with the same assignment. To make the Redskins contenders for the first time in two decades. They got close. They got real close. Twice. But now, early in 2017, that ship seems to be sailing wayward, unless the Redskins can turn the tide.

And what’s worse, McVay is gone with the tides of the market. There wasn’t much buzz around McVay as a coaching option at the beginning of the offseason, at least not in 2017. But as time passed, he garnered more and more consideration for his work with Kirk Cousins and the offense. After a couple interviews took him out west, he eventually stayed there and set up shop with the Los Angeles Rams, becoming the youngest head coach in NFL history. A year ago, he and Jay Gruden were partners. And now, in Week 2 of 2017, in a crucial matchup that the Redskins have to win to stay in the race… McVay is standing in their way.

You’d better believe this matchup has a little something extra to it. While McVay and Gruden will catch up like old friends before the game, both have scores to settle in this affair. McVay has football ambition. He wants to show he was the difference in Washington. And Gruden wants to show that he doesn’t need McVay to succeed.

It’ll certainly be fun to watch, unless it becomes a blowout rather quickly. And with the high-powered offenses lining up for battle (Redskins are hypothetically high-powered. I’m clinging to one last fiber of positivity. Leave me be), anything is possible.

The game is on at 4:25 EST, taking place in L.A. Memorial Colosseum in, you guessed it, Los Angeles. For most of Virginia, Maryland, and southern California, if you’re, for some odd reason, there and not going to the game in person, live coverage is available on FOX Sports. For those of you who are stuck with the Cowboys, NFL Game Pass and FuboTV are just a couple ways to stream the game live online, available and at your full disposal. And as always, Redskins Radio will be covering the game and providing commentary.

Do what you will with this information. But before you do anything else, be sure to read up on our pre-game content below. That way, you can show up to the watch party with all the information there is to know about the game. Your smarts will easily make up for your fantasy football team that got destroyed by David Johnson’s injury. It’ll be like nothing happened! So read up! And enjoy the game.
