The Redskins have had a hectic Sunday, indeed.

A report came out early this morning that second-year safety Su’a Cravens was pondering retirement. On the heels of that report, we now have word that Cravens has been placed on the non-football exempt list. In his freed up roster spot, the Redskins have placed veteran offensive lineman T.J. Clemmings, who was waived from the Vikings earlier this week.

The Redskins’ decision to land Su’a Cravens on the NFI list ensures that the former Trojan will miss at least the first month of the season. It also gives Cravens more time to think about his decision. The 22-year old was in the midst of his transition to safety, and if he were to retire, not only would  he become one of the youngest professional players ever to retire, but he would also leave a gaping hole at the strong safety position.

Cravens’ mulling over retirement isn’t only about his knee injury sustained last year. There have been questions surrounding his drive and love for the game. He hadn’t pushed through that injury as quickly as team mates expected. This conversation between Will Compton and Cravens does well to provide a close-up look at the issue. Cravens is counting his days. That’s not supposed to happen.

For now, Cravens has time to think over this crucial decision. But the Redskins have wasted no time utilizing his open roster spot. The team has reportedly claimed 25-year old tackle T.J. Clemmings off of waivers. The former fourth round pick will provide depth on the line. He fills a void left by the recently cut Vinston Painter, and he solidifies the reserves in that department just a little bit more.

We’ll keep you in the loop with the Cravens situation. It’s never easy to see a talented player walk away from the game, but it has happened before. Cravens has had trouble with injuries, and it’s not a crime to think about one’s future. Cravens doesn’t have to rush his decision. The Redskins have given him plenty of time to think. It’s not a decision that will be made overnight. Nevertheless, Cravens has been thinking about it for a long time.
