Redskins Live Game Blog: Preseason Week 2 vs. Packers
The Washington Redskins are ready to take on the Green Bay Packers in preseason Week 2. Follow along with all the action here in our live game blog.
Game day is once again here. Just over a week after the team’s disappointing loss in the first week of the 2017 preseason, the Redskins are ready to take on their next opponent. The Green Bay Packers are coming to town for what will be the first home game of the 2017 season for the Redskins. The fans will be out in full force, and they will be hoping to see a Redskins victory.
While a victory may not be in the cards for the Redskins, they will still have a chance to compete with the Packers. They have a handful of players that should be productive in the contest. There are also some key position battles to watch that include many new acquisitions and and rookies. These will be on display early and often, and they are the most important thing to watch in the preseason.
We also took a moment to make some bold predictions about the contest as well. We asked some questions about the Redskins, and even traveled behind enemy lines to talk with Packers experts about the contest.

The Redskins will look to get solid play out of their starters on both sides of the ball while their depth players will fight it out for the final roster spots. This will be an interesting game, and this will probably be the second closest lineup to the one that the Redskins will march out on opening night.
On this live game blog, we will discuss the actions in the game as they unfold, and keep up to date on the latest news coming out of Washington. Feel free to comment below as you follow along with the Redskins vs. Packers matchup!
7:07: It appears that Josh Doctson is in uniform today. It will be interesting to see if he plays in the second preseason game!
7:08: Looking for how to watch tonight’s game? We’ve got you covered with all the details here.
7:14: The quarterbacks in action tonight will be Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy, and Nate Sudfeld. The Packers will likely feature Brett Hundley and Joe Callahan, while Aaron Rodgers could play but if he does, it won’t be too much.
7:25: Just five minutes until game time! The Redskins need to make sure they start quickly, unlike last week. They need to make sure that their offense gets some momentum before the third preseason contest.
7:27: Some big news about the Redskins opponent. The Packers are going to be starting Rodgers at the quarterback position.
7:35: The Redskins are set to receive the ball. They will start the game on offense with Cousins at quarterback!
7:43: Morgan Moses left the field hurt on the first drive. He was replaced by Ty Nsekhe who committed a penalty immediately after coming in. The Redskins came up short on third down, and will punt early.
7:44: Great instincts by Fabian Moreau! He forced a fumble on the punt and it was recovered by Niles Paul. First down, Redskins!
7:47: Kirk Cousins had a couple bad passes in the red zone, underthrowing Rob Kelley on a dump off and overthrowing a man short of the marker on third down. It’s worth keeping an eye on, given how slowly Cousins started last year.
7:48: Dustin Hopkins converts a field goal! That gives the Redskins the early 3-0 lead. They will come out on defense for the first time next.
8:01: The Packers have moved the ball into the red zone, and are threatening to score. The Redskins defense has to get a big play from somebody if they want to keep the lead.

8:05: Packers score a touchdown on a Rodgers-Martellus Bennett connection. Zach Brown had good coverage on the play, but he just was overmatched against the massive Bennett. The Packers now lead 7-0.
8:06: The starting middle linebackers, Mason Foster and Brown, looked good on the first position. The duo easily got to the ball carrier. It looks like Brown will have the early advantage in the position battle against Will Compton.
8:10: Kirk Cousins once again was unable to generate much on the offensive drive for the Redskins. He hit Jamison Crowder on a short pass, but tried to thread the needle and get to him in double coverage. It didn’t work. They go three and out.
8:11: Fabian Moreau once again with a nice tackle on special teams. It looks like the third round rookie is going to be an impactful member of that unit early in his career.
8:15: Preston Smith rudely greets Brett Hundley to the game by sacking him on first down. Smith came in unblocked, but did well to stay with Hundley as he brought him down.
8:17: The Redskins force a three and out on a nice defensive possession. Jonathan Allen and Matt Ioannidis made a nice play on a screen pass to help send the Packers backward. The duo has looked good thus far, and it is fair to wonder if they are going to continue to play ahead of big free agent signing Terrell McClain.
8:20: Terrelle Pryor finally makes a catch for the Redskins. However, the offensive line still isn’t looking great for the Redskins. They aren’t winning at the point of attack, despite their strong personnel. They need to fix this.
8:21: After one quarter, the Redskins trail, 7-3.
8:31: The Redskins had a decent drive going, but they were kept alive by penalties and mistakes by the Packers. On fourth and one, the Packers stop Rob Kelley short and the Redskins turn it over.
8:32: Rich Tandler offered some thoughts on the play of the offensive line:
8:37: Brett Hundley leads a nice touchdown drive for the Packers. He threw a perfect ball to Jeff Janis against Fabian Moreau, who had pretty good coverage. Hundley made the right decisions on passes, and eventually found running back Aaron Jones wide open for a touchdown. Jones was open due to a busted assignment, and it looked like Chris Carter was the guilty party.
Must Read: Redskins may regret passing on Nathan Peterman
8:43: Chris Thompson has a HUGE reception from Kirk Cousins to convert a third down. The Redskins will hopefully get some momentum from that!
8:46: Cousins overshot a wide open Crowder deep into Packers territory. It was a bad mistake, and a discouraging play overall. Cousins needs to improve quickly, or the funk he is currently in may carry over into the regular season.
8:55: Moreau has continued to flash, making a nice pass breakup and a good tackle. Linebacker Martrell Spaight also burst into the backfield and crushed a Packers runner for a loss.
8:57: Phil Taylor sacks Hundley on third down! The veteran has looked great in his first two preseason games, and may be the starter at the defensive tackle position.
9:03: Josh Doctson with a nice catch, his first of the preseason. The Redskins are driving and have a chance to score…
9:08: On fourth and goal, Cousins finds an open Crowder in the end zone for a touchdown, their first of the preseason. The Redskins now trail, 14-10. That will likely be the score heading into halftime.
9:13: The Redskins trail 14-10 at the half. During the intermission, make sure to vote in our Redskins halftime poll on Twitter!
9:27: We’re back in action, but here’s what our takeaways from the first half were. Check them out!
9:31: The Redskins do well to stop the Packers quickly at the beginning of the third quarter. Joey Mbu and Chris Carter help to sack Hundley. Now, the Redskins offense, led by Colt McCoy for the first time tonight, will come onto the field.
9:38: Samaje Perine made some nice plays for the Redskins, but they ultimately had to punt the ball away. Notably, the play below was one of Perine’s best of the drive!
9:43: Chris Carter makes yet another sack! The outside linebacker is making a strong case to make the team’s final roster thanks to his pass rush ability and his solid special teams skills.
9:49: Perine is really making a case to have a bigger role with the Redskins. He had a nice 14 yard run, so the Redskins may consider giving him a few snaps against starters in Preseason Week 3.
9:59: Pete Robertson is able to notch a strip sack, and the Redskins force another three and out. The defense looks strong, and Greg Manusky has to be happy with how the players are performing tonight.
10:03: Robert Davis is getting involved in the passing attack in the second half, connecting with Colt McCoy on a few catches. After three quarters, the Redskins are leading 17-14!
10:11: Nate Sudfeld is coming in to play quarterback. Colt McCoy was much better than he was in the preseason opener, and hopefully Sudfeld will show similar improvement.
10:25: Taysom Hill has a couple of nice rushes, including a 23 yard touchdown run after scrambling for a first down. The young quarterback’s running ability has the Packers up, 21-17 with less than half of the fourth quarter left. Comeback time for the Redskins!
10:32: The Packers have the ball back with less than five minutes left to play. The Redskins need to get a stop quickly to have one last chance to score a game winning touchdown.
10:41: The Redskins have the ball deep in their own territory with 2:22 left to go. They need a touchdown to win. Go Skins!
10:43: A couple of nice passes to Robert Davis gets the Redskins moving. It’s the two minute warning, and they are still deep in their own territory.
10:52: The Redskins can’t convert a critical fourth down, as Nate Sudfeld’s pass falls incomplete. The Packers win the game 21-17.
Next: Redskins have up-and-down performance vs. Packers
This was not too bad of a performance for the Redskins. They could have been better, but they could have been worse too. It is certainly better than their Week 1 performance, and the Redskins have to be happy with the progress they made. Thanks for following along with our live Redskins blog!
