The Washington Redskins charity has been selected as one of sixteen finalists for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award. The award is given annually to several select charities who go above and beyond in their efforts.

Sometimes it’s easy to take for granted what sports do for us. Sports bring people together. They have a unique way of emphasizing teamwork, loyalty, and collaboration. They teach accountability. Responsibility.

For the beneficiaries of the Washington Redskins’ charitable foundation, sports may mean even more. The organization was selected as one of sixteen finalists in contention for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award. There were originally 130 applicants all across the sports network of North America. It’s easy to see why Scot McCloughan has continued to donate to the foundation after his dismissal.

The recognition is well-deserved. Since the foundation’s inception in 2000, it has donated more than $20 million to various communities in and around the D.C. area. The foundation made even further strides in 2016, expanding their reach to children’s literacy, as well as launching a new health and wellness program known as Redskins FITT.  Team president Bruce Allen released a statement in regard to the foundation’s recognition, per the team’s official website.

"“We are proud that the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation has been chosen as a finalist for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Sports Award. We also are very grateful to all of our active and alumni players and sponsors who have unselfishly contributed to helping tens of thousands of kids in our community.”"

Sports allow people to come together and work for a common goal. The Redskins’ foundation has achieved much in their quest to bring communities together, and this award is indicative of that. It’s amazing to see what football, the game we love, can enable people to do. No matter if the Redskins win, tie, or lose, they’ll continue to help children win for years to come.
