Mike Mayock is most notable for his role as a commentator on NFL Network. Could the face of the NFL Scouting Combine be the new general manager of the Washington Redskins?

When the Washington Redskins fired general manager Scot McCloughan on Thursday, fans and players were all rightfully upset. In two years, McCloughan had done a solid job of finding quality young players to fit into the Redskins scheme and looked to be building towards a strong future. Then, disaster struck as tensions within the front office started to grow. Owner Daniel Snyder opted to stick with Redskins President Bruce Allen over McCloughan and sent the general manager packing.

Now, the Redskins are going to be looking for a new general manager. They will have a lot of quality candidates available across the NFL, but one name in particular has stuck out in early speculations. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Redskins could have some interest in bringing Mike Mayock on as their general manager. Mayock is a strong talent evaluator, and his fit with the Redskins could actually work very well.

Mayock is currently most notable for his yearly role as the expert on the NFL Network’s coverage of the Scouting Combine. He has been working for the NFL Network since 2005, and is widely considered to be a knowledgeable source when it comes to college football. That is the major role that McCloughan had previously held, so it would make sense for Mayock to take over those responsibilities if the Redskins are seriously interested in him. For the record, Mayock told the NFL Network that he had not yet been contacted by the Redskins, so this is just some very early buzz.

Of course, there are some serious questions about bringing in a general manager with little front office experience. The results have been mixed in the past, and some criticized the San Francisco 49ers earlier this offseason for hiring former NFL safety John Lynch. Lynch had previously been a commentator on television, like Mayock, and though the jury is still out on some of his early signings, he has made some questionable moves. That would include paying former Redskins receiver Pierre Garcon a whopping $47.5 million over five years.

Then again, Mayock is not Lynch, and perhaps he understands NFL contract value slightly better. Even still, working with the Redskins front office could prove to be a challenge, given that they have not been able to retain quality players and as a result, have had to overpay free agents to sign with the team.

At the end of the day, having Mayock aboard would definitely help the team in terms of scouting. No matter what happens, it seems like the Redskins are going to wait until after the NFL Draft to hire a new general manager. It seems pointless now to rush to add a general manager just to have them at the draft. I think the Redskins understand this, and that is why a move may not be made until later in the spring.
