The Washington Redskins are officially having one of the weirdest offseasons of any NFL team. Rumor has it that they could opt to start Colt McCoy in the event that Kirk Cousins is traded.

As of right now, not a single person knows what the Washington Redskins are planning to do at the quarterback position. Midway through the 2016 season, it looked like Kirk Cousins was going to be their guy. He was on a hot streak, and was in the process of winning over the front office. However, after the team collapsed down the stretch, the Redskins reevaluated the position and have since been reluctant to give Cousins a new contract. Now, it looks like they may opt to give Colt McCoy a chance to run the team.

More from Commanders Rumors

While the Redskins slapped Cousins with the exclusive franchise tag, it seems that neither side is particularly close to a deal that would keep Cousins in Washington long term. The team cannot afford to hit him with the franchise tag again during the 2018 offseason, as it would cost the team an excess of $30 million. Essentially, if the team does not agree to a long term deal with Cousins this offseason, he may walk away.

For this reason, there have been a lot of trade winds circling around Cousins. Most notably, Kyle Shanahan, the former offensive coordinator for the Redskins, is interested in acquiring Cousins. Shanahan now is the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and they have a major need at the quarterback position. Cousins would be a superb fit, and the Redskins could possibly score the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft if they were to trade Cousins. That would allow them to add a stellar running back like Leonard Fournette or a transcendent defensive talent like Jonathan Allen.
