According to rumors swirling around the NFL, the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers may be trying to make a three team trade involving Kirk Cousins.

What has already been a wild offseason for the Washington Redskins is about to get significantly more wild. As the team’s ongoing saga with Kirk Cousins has continued, it has become more and more apparent that a trade could be on the horizon for the team. Though the Redskins maintain that they want to keep Cousins, reuniting him with former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers seems like a real possibility.

Well, add NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport to a list of NFL sources hearing about a potential deal. However, the deal Rapoport heard about could possibly involve a third team. The Dallas Cowboys. Rapoport explain the details on his Twitter account.

If what Rapoport is hearing has some truth to it, that would be unbelievable. Trades are rare enough in the NFL, but as he said, a potential three team deal would be unprecedented.

The deal would also be extremely foolish, at least from the Washington Redskins’ standpoint. Acquiring Tony Romo’s massive contract would be a gigantic mistake. Though $18 million annually is actually below market value for quarterbacks, Romo has too much risk attached to him to make that much money. He has only appeared in five games over the past two seasons and it seems unlikely that he will be able to stay healthy for a full NFL season. At age 36, soon to be 37, Romo’s best days are well behind him.

Considering that the Cowboys are planning on releasing Romo, the Redskins could attempt to target him on the free agent market. Yes, they would not be guaranteed to land him in that circumstance, but he would be much cheaper and would have much less guaranteed money. Even still, not having Romo would be better than acquiring him on his current, bloated contract.

Though Rapoport’s idea may seem intriguing on the surface, it simply is not going to be the deal that sends Kirk Cousins to the 49ers. I still think a straight up swap of Cousins for the No. 2 overall pick is beyond fair. Cousins is a potential franchise quarterback, and he should be treated as such in any trade. The Redskins cannot afford to give up Cousins, get a middling draft pick, and pick up damaged goods like Romo. It would be a terrible look for their front office.
