3. Pittsburgh Steelers – Artie Burns, CB

The Pittsburgh Steelers came into this draft needing to add a cornerback.  However, with the top guys coming off the board already the Steelers reached big time and took Miami’s Artie Burns with the 25th pick in round one.

Burns has good size and obviously the Steelers liked him a lot.  But I think the Steelers could have gotten him in the second round.  Clemson’s Mackensie Alexander was still on the board but the Steelers failed to take him.  It’s possible that Alexander’s 5’10 height may have had something to do with it.

Just like the New York Giants reached on a taller corner in Eli Apple, the Steelers did the same.  It’s not that height isn’t important at the cornerback position because it can be,  But in the first round of the draft I think talent trumps prototypical size.

If the player they wanted wasn’t on the board, the Steelers should have addressed another need.  But they lost value by picking Burns in the first round and must try to regain it later in the draft..
