5 Redskins Rumors You Need to Know About Right Now
Franchise Tag a Possibility for Kirk Cousins?
One of the Redskins’ top priorities this offseason is getting Cousins under contract for the foreseeable future. He’s coming off a historic season that saw him leap from backup to potential franchise quarterback. While the jury is still out on his ability to be more than a one-year wonder, it’s pretty clear the Redskins will reward him handsomely for his efforts in 2015.
There is no guarantee, however, that a deal gets done this offseason. Chances are Cousins will be looking for huge money, somewhere in the $17-$20 million annually range. The Redskins, meanwhile, aren’t in the greatest of salary cap situations, and may not be willing to dish out that much money for one year’s worth of quality production. So what’s the alternative?
The Redskins and GM Scot McCloughan have made it clear that the franchise tag is an option to keep Cousins aboard. Although it would result in a lucrative 2016 pay day for Cousins, it wouldn’t bind Washington long term. There’s a good chance D.C. wants some “opt out” options, which may force them to slap Cousins with the franchise tag instead of letting him hit the open market.
