Dashon Goldson on the Chopping Block?

There are two very different sides to Dashon Goldson. On one side, the Redskins have a well-respected veteran presence who is looked up to in the locker room. On the other side, the Redskins have a subpar, severely overpaid safety who spent the entire 2015 campaign being a nuisance for the D.C. defense. The leadership qualities are excellent, but can the Redskins really afford to keep paying Goldson so much for pitiful play?

This past season, ProFootballFocus rated Goldson has one of the absolute worst starting safeties in the NFL. While his coverage skills were solid at times, it was his inability to efficiently play the run that earned him the designation. Is that worth the $8 million that he’s set to make in 2016? I don’t know about you, but my gut is telling me that it’s time to send Goldson packing.

The Redskins already have a number of intriguing young safeties on the roster (Jeron Johnson, Kyshoen Jarrett, Duke Ihenacho), and all will be looking for opportunities to see the field this season. That’s why cutting the cord with Goldson and saving $8 million against the cap makes the most sense. He’s an overpriced liability on the field, and Washington shouldn’t let it slide because he’s a joy to have in the locker room.
