Nick Allegretti's rough day
The Washington Commanders made a big gamble at center this offseason. Previous starter Tyler Biadasz was released, and general manager Adam Peters placed all his faith in Nick Allegretti to step up and fill the void.
It was never going to be easy against Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, but Allegretti was woeful. His inability to protect the ball and his lack of awareness became a weak link that the Philadelphia Eagles exploited at will. It's only one game, but the Commanders need to start thinking about alternatives if he cannot bounce back.
Because if he can't, Jayden Daniels is going to suffer.
Antonio Williams' flashes
As mentioned, the Commanders' passing attack was poor overall. However, the brief flashes of promise from third-round rookie Antonio Williams provided some light amid the doom and gloom.
Williams had a strong summer after becoming the No. 71 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. He had a first-round grade before his final college campaign at Clemson, and the Commanders believe he can be a major asset.
Fans got a couple of glimpses against the Eagles. Williams came up with two important grabs in key moments, which will no doubt be a big confidence boost to take from his first experience in a regular-season setting in the pros.
Commanders' pressure packages caused problems
The introduction of new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones brought real intrigue. There were signs of improvement over the summer, and the pressure generated on Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts in Week 1 represents a solid foundation from which to build.
Jones is bringing much of the Brian Flores philosophy to Washington, and that approach was evident throughout in Philadelphia. The exotic blitzes, disguised coverages, and attacks from all angles constantly got Hurts off his spot. The confusion worked in their favor, and Eagles fans in the stands were noticeably frustrated late in the contest.
It wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But once everyone becomes more familiar with the designs and their responsibilities, this unit could be a pleasant surprise.
Fine margins cost the Commanders when it counted
In the end, the Commanders lost because they failed to execute in the critical moments. Whether it was the blocked extra point, the Stefon Diggs flag, or the missed two-point conversion, it all mattered in the end.
The Commanders fought hard right until the end. But there are no moral victories in the NFL, and this will go down as a heartbreaking loss on the road when victory was within reach.
This game got away from the Commanders. They shot themselves in the foot too many times, and the Eagles managed to hang on for what could be an important victory.
It was so near yet so far for the Commanders. But they can take some heart from it.
